We just can't shut off the water to the whole place, because we would lose our yards - Southern Californians depend on watering (even frugally) because it doesn't rain very much in the summer, if at all.

I just posted in the Plumbing forum about what to shut off during a 32-day trip this summer. We were lucky - the new cabinets matched, our favorite contractor was able to get them in without any damage to the existing granite counter tops, and the cabinets came in within the 4-6 weeks promised. Cost US personally about $1K more to do it that way, but the insurance wasn't cooperative in that degree. Rather than relying on someone to rebuild the box portion of our cabinets and reuse the fronts, we just ordered new cabinets. Fortunately for us, Home Depot still carried our cabinets. We had to have the cabinets, drywall (including ceiling drywall) pulled out, and dried. This past Wednesday, we just finished the kitchen rehab, which damaged about 1/3 of the kitchen. Unlike the Murphy's Law mentioned earlier, we were actually HOME when a copper pipe made a 1/8' hole and did $10K damage to our kitchen before we noticed it. HTH some folks.Ĭoming into this thread late, but with some experience. = Overall: only two negatives, one very small. Definitely needs that new 'no fingerprint SS' finish, instead. The SS shows every watermark and fingerprint. You want to be able to see if that green light has changed to red, on the suppressor. Most of us don't have the fridge plugged into an outlet that's easily viewed, so this is something to keep in mind. Once it's been tripped, it's off and useless. I SHOULD have bought an appliance surge suppressor, especially since they're not that expensive! You need to keep an eye on it, however.

This is what killed the first Amana bottom freezer after only 10 yrs. We seldom actually lose power, but it turns out our power is very 'dirty' e.g., we do have a lot of power fluctuations. CONS: - That sealed compressor is very sensitive to electricity fluctuations. I was very surprised to find the Amanas seem to hold just as much as the old Kenmore did. Due to Energy Star/more insulation, I've had to drop down to the 18 cu. Yet all I need do is rearrange a few bowls and jars, and I can slide in another 4-qt Tupperware, a dozen more eggs, and a dinner plate of leftovers. The shelves are adjustable, but they don't look any different than any other fridge model. I have never quite figured out how Amana does this. This has a definite 'con' to it, mentioned below. It's a sealed compressor unit, apparently. Here's my take on the pros/cons: PROS: - VERY quiet. The previous one was so quiet I sometimes wondered if it was running! I love the Amana. If I am any further away I don't notice it. The new one does seem to run more often, and is VERY slightly noisier - I can hear a very soft low-pitched hum if I'm within one foot of it, when it turns on. It's an Amana bottom freezer, which replaced.an Amana bottom freezer. It's taken me a while to get around to reading this thread as we bought a new fridge last year and are very happy with it. If you've got any ideas or product recommendations, please let me know. If I'm lost in thought, typing on a keyboard, or watching TV, I need something that will jar me enough to get my attention.
EXTRA LOUD KITCHEN TIMER PORTABLE
I've used hand-held, portable timers in the past, but their beeps were usually so soft that I didn't even notice them - even if they were placed right next to me. I need both qualities - loud sound and continuous beeping until manually turned off.

It takes my brain more than 5 beeps to register a new sound. My new microwave has a loud enough sound, but it shuts off automatically after five beeps. My wall oven timer beeps continuously until I turn it off, but the sound is quite soft. But after owning three that only lasted a year, I bought another brand last time the GE stopped working. I used to have a GE microwave that had a really loud & continuous timer beep. However, even with my hearing aids on, if I'm in another room, I don't hear the wall oven or microwave timers beeping. I'm hard of hearing and wear hearing aids.
